As of 2nd of July 2010, Facebook has begun testing the use of face detection technology, brought to them with the recent acquisition of Divvyshot, which will reduce the tedious amount of time spent tagging your friends and family in photos.

Facebook has always been more than eager to keep itself updated. It’s been six years since Facebook surfaced, witnessing many updates and changes to keep the look fresh and bring new and interesting features for Facebook’s users.

Working along the same lines, the social media giant is now testing a face detection technology to bring a new feature that would help users a lot in tagging friends in a photo. With face detection technology users will need to react to a prompt that tries to identify a friend in the photo and gives a suggestion. User can either accept the suggestion or deny it to select the friend manually.

The users will be required to select a photo of each friend which will be used for auto face detection by Facebook’s new feature. Once done, it will be used to make a match with every photo selected for tagging. Thereby, users will get suggestions, wherever the match is found and will be able to tag a friend with a single click. It’s quite simple and hassle free.

"People love tagging their friends and family in photos, but we've heard that it can be a tedious process. You now can add tags with just a couple of clicks directly from your home page and other sections of the site, using the same face detection technology that cameras have used for years," explains Facebook's new product manager for Photos, Sam Odio.

"With this new feature, tagging is faster since you don't need to select a face," says Odio. "It's already selected for you, just like those rectangles you see around your friends' faces when you take a photo with a modern digital camera. All that's left for you to do is type a name and hit enter."

According to Odio, 99% of people using Facebook have uploaded at least one photo, given that over 100 million photos are uploaded every day. With a large number of Facebook users focusing on photos only, this feature just might lead the popularity graph of Facebook to rise dramatically.
