PostSubject: Recommended Guidelines about posting article/book references   Fri Aug 27, 2010 6:24 pm

Presently I'm one of the rare few who shares articles and books on the forums. However, I thought I'd make guidelines so that if you want to share something and are uncertain about it. This way you can share it AND also give us your opinion about it.

1. ALWAYS give the source of the article/book. Especially if you have taken the article from another website/form of media.
There are a few simple reasons for this.
i. If you quote something/someplace and do not give a proper citation/reference to that. Then it constitutes as plagiarism. Once you have given credit, you can (sort of) repay the author of the original by linking it.
ii. Search engines rely on one key factor when establishing how high to rank a result. How many other domains are linking to this domain. e.g. it is important to Google, yahoo, and all those other sites to know how many websites are linking to our domain. By citing the source, you are giving added credibility to the author of the original post, their website and the domain on search results.

2. Add your opinion about the article AFTER the quote or not at all.
Try not to give away spoilers in it. We don't like spoilers :P

The reason for after can be seen in the following few posts. If a person reads YOUR opinion first, then they will read the quote with what you said in mind. This means they are reading it either with the same thought process that you have, or influenced by it not allowing them to reach their own conclusions about the quote.

That's it for now.

Do let me know, what you guys think of the rating system I've presently set-up above.
Should something be added in it?
Should something be removed?
Should this post be trashed?

Agreed.

2 and 3 are more like guidelines for myself and I know they are a little whack which is why the post is guidelines and not rules :P

But hey, using and fixing the 2nd point we could start rating content when we post it so it'd prove to be like a micro summary by the poster... know what I mean?

I think the 3rd is worst.

I believe the best way would be for someone else to first read the article then your opinion. If he reads your opinion first I think that will effect the reader a little bit on how he would understand the article.

I agree the best way would be the opinion at the end of the article to deter influencing the reader!

Hmmmm both of you have a very valid point .... If the person posts their opinion/rating first, then the reader either shares the bias of the poster or is somehow influenced by it.

Editing original post to reflect this perspective!

2 giant hugs for both of you!

2nd point I think could be completly removed since I believe no3 covers it up.

hmmmm ... true ... true ....

#2 Ditched wrote:
2. Try to rate the article you have posted. after quoting it
The
reasons for this are simple, that way you can express how you feel
about the article. As a rough guideline (expect this rating to change
often until its finalized) you can use the following system.
======================================================
Author Credibility: Min:0 Max:3
This
says how credible you think the author and/or domain/company which
posted it are. This is important. The higher the credibility the higher
its rating.
This is also to reflect your opinion about a possible
bias of the author regarding the stance they have taken regarding a
certain topic. The lower you think the possibility of a bias, the higher
rating here.

Facts stated: Min:0 Max:2
Most articles quote
all kinds of sources, if you think enough facts have been stated which
are credible (even if the author hasn't mentioned the source of the
"research"). The more facts get stated, the more legit the argument is,
the higher the rating it should get.

Personal Connection? Min:0 Max:2
If
the article seems to be able to relate to you. YOU! And you think it
would connect with the rest of us as well. It should get a high rating
in this field.

Usefulness Min:0 Max:3
The more useful you think the article is, the higher a rating it should get. The lesser its usefulness.
======================================================

This makes #3 #2. OP changed to reflect this.
