| Contact sports trigger neurological problemsBy Yasmin Helal Source | Quote: | After several examinations of the brains and spinal cords of 12 athletes, scientists from the Boston University School of Medicine and the Department of Veterans Affairs discovered the link between playing sports and the neurological disorder.
While several of the 12 athletes displayed a number of disorders, the new discovered disease was shared by the majority of them. The scientists labeled the disorder as chronic traumatic encephalomyopathy or CTEM.
The disorder is a result of repeatedly receiving head trauma which playing contact sports cause. “The illness causes muscle tissue to waste away,” Bloomberg reported.
“We’re hopeful that this new work may shed light on potentially exciting new possibilities for biomarker and therapy development,” Steve Perrin, chief executive officer of the ALS Therapy Development Institute in Cambridge, said to Bloomberg.
Previously, scientists had confused symptoms of the disorder amyotrophic lateral sclerosis with CTEM.
“Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as ‘Lou Gehrig's Disease,’ is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord,” said ALS Association.
Unlike CTEM however, ALS, which affects around 30000 Americans every year, has no known causes. Also, many renowned athletes have been victims to this illness.
Although, they are two separate disorders, most of patients of CTEM were previously diagnosed with ALS.
“The athletes’ families donated their bodies to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Bedford, Massachusetts. All 12 of them showed signs of chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE, a progressive degenerative brain disease. The research was funded by a grant from the National Football League,” as reported Bloomberg. |
