Indian employers have resorted to scanning social networking sites to check digital footprints of employees and new recruits. It is done by the HR departments of most companies but they may even hire third-party verification agencies to track the web history of staff members, Times of India reported on Tuesday.
The idea is to scan popular sites like Facebook, Twitter, Orkut, MySpace and LinkedIn to digitally profile employees who may have passed any ill comments against the management or the bosses. Some have spoken positively for the website scanning approach as they believe that hiring is a very subjective manner and every company or organization has their own way of doing so and therefore if some want to incorporate social website scanning as a requirement then be it.
The Times of India quoted Madan Padaki, CEO of skill assessment firm MeriTrack as saying "It started with IT hiring, but is spreading to other industry verticals." Even blogs are examined to check behavior and attitude of employees and job-seekers, said Vineeta Singh, director HR solutions Quetzal Verify. I guess gone are the good old days when you felt that you could spill all your feelings and frustrations in your blog or your personal sites and no one could access that information, as now you never know when, where or who may be spying on you. |
My comments regarding this post.
This isn't something which is new or happening only in India. So, no offense is intended. Social searching has been common for some time now especially by companies to keep a tab on its employees, by companies to "better understand" its potential employees, and that list, to be honest, is endless.
Let me give you a personal example of such a situation. My online profiles did not connect or link to my blog or to the DESTINY forums. Even if they did, someone needed to be a personal acquaintance to be able to know my alias as Xs. Last year, I walked into a first-contact meeting and the lady told me, "I think you have a skill for writing, your poetry is beautiful". I was a little surprised. At that point, my facebook linked to this forum but not to this account and it didn't link to my blog either. After the meeting I did a little search using my name and found a few tiny connections of it to my blog.
My point is, searching the web for information about other people is increasingly easy. Most of us don't know how to even begin personalizing our lives, and those of us who do are still at a standstill. _________________

| Getting people's information from the internet isnt hard. Its easy as hell and I did it several times to face some ppl I didnt like.
