Facebook breeds narcissism
By Amna Al Haddad

Quote:
A survey conducted in the Department of Psychology in York University in Canada showed a positive correlation between narcissism and self-esteem.

The researcher, Soraya Mehdizadeh surveyed 100 college students; 50 females and 50 males, and found when individuals’ online activity is more self-promotional they exhibit higher levels of narcissism and lower self-esteem.

Such people had their “about me” sections referring to their own intellectual abilities and photos displaying their physical attractiveness more than posting memories they had with their friends and families.

In the study, narcissism was defined as “a pervasive pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration and an exaggerated sense of self-importance.”

The study further explained how one’s personality differs in face-to-face communication as opposed to online communication. When one communicates in real settings, the person’s identity is constructed under certain limitations; such as gender, ethnicity, and social background which affects the way they are perceived by others. While in online communication, the person’s identity is more controlled and ideal individual traits are conveyed.

Hence, facebook allows the user a great deal of control in terms of how a person presents him or herself and how they’re perceived by their peers. Citing the study, Facebook “offers a gateway for hundreds of shallow relationships and emotionally detached communication.”

Also, the narcissist spent more time on the social networking website than their counterparts and their activities where more self-promotional in the following areas: viewing photos, status updates, notes, and main display picture.

And when it came to gender, males narcissist where more self-promotional by highlighting their intelligence in their “About me” section, while females opted to post images as their self promotional behavior.

Yups, Facebook is heaven for 2 things only in my honest opinion.

1. People who want to talk about themselves to other people.
2. People who want to keep a track of what other people are up to.

Interestingly, twitter is pretty much the same thing.

I rarely use facebook but right now its the easist way to contact ppl after my cellphone stopped working last week. Although I would also be able to contact them in real life but that would be more than a 30 min walk.
