| Google plans pay-per-view filmsBy Heba Hashem on 2010-09-11 Source Google’s YouTube is in talks with Hollywood’s leading movie studios to launch a global pay-per-view video service by the end of 2010, putting it direct competition with Apple in the race to control the digital distribution of film and television content.| Quote: | The world's most popular search engine has been approaching the studios with the proposition of streaming an international, on-demand movie service pegged to Google and YouTube. The film rental service has been undergoing beta- since January.
California-based Google will use its search technology and YouTube to direct viewers to the new service, which is expected to launch in the US, and gradually extend to other countries.
“Google and YouTube are a global phenomenon with a hell of a lot of eyeballs – more than any cable or satellite service,” said one executive with knowledge of the plans. “They’ve talked about how many people they could steer to this . . . it’s a huge number.”
Although negotiations have been ongoing for several months, they have recently to speed up as competition intensified between media and technology companies over the digital broadcasting of film and TV programs.
The Google project has caused excitement in Hollywood because film studios have been searching for new revenues to compensate DVD sales, which are in rapid decline.
Viewers will stream the films rather than download them, and newer titles will cost about $5. Most importantly, movies would be available at the same time as their release on DVD and on Apple’s iTunes store and Amazon.com, which means that Google can rely on recent box-office hits to generate the service.
Owner of Google Images, Google Earth, Google Maps, Google Scholar, Google Translate, amongst many other products, the search engine giant has been searching for a breakthrough with YouTube since acquiring the video site for $1.65bn in 2006.
YouTube has already struck numerous content deals and launched a free movie service in April. With millions of users daily, Youtube is best-known for its user-generated content and online video entertainment. |
