Subject: I stole this off the internet. Did I? Fri Sep 17, 2010 4:11 pm
I saw this video and thought I should steal it because it urged me to simply by its title.
Ahhhhhhhhhhh I feel much better now.
My opinion
The author, is saying the right thing, which is why I had to share it.
And yes, this wasn't the only video that I liked on the blog. I think I will steal some others too. They go in some other topics, also open to the public.
Why do I think this is alright? If we "steal" a video or an article WITHOUT citing its source. Then that is nothing more than plagiarism.
When we cite the source, preferably with a link to it, we are actually helping the other person out. Yes, in the form of marketing. Here is how: 1. If offline content is cited, then its a free advertisement or user review, giving the product (whatever it might be) a little more credibility.
2. If online content is cited, search engines take that as a good thing. It increases the likelihood that the website or page in particular (depending on the search engine) gets a higher ranking in search results. So even if NONE of us click the citation links (we often don't), the organization or individual who makes the post is better off.
What do we do when it just doesn't seem right? Often, and yes I've seen this happen often. Authors on blogs tend to give all sorts of information doing little more than paraphrasing it. That is still unethical. My reasoning for that is also simple, think of research papers and thesis documents. Information presented in those documents, regardless of size, NEEDS to be cited if you wish for the thesis or research paper to be credible or authentic at the very least.
Simpler reasoning? :) Speed = (Distance traveled) / (Time it took to travel distance mentioned above)
Am I stealing from Newton?
@The Resident: (who is the author of this video) IF you decide to open the email I'm just going to send you AND IF you decide to click the link (to this page) AND IF you decide to read until here.
I'm speculating that you got angry by the image/video which was posted of you (which you mentioned in this video) causing you to post this video. I can't blame you BUT I would like to get your perspective on this matter.
Please feel free to give ANY counter perspectives. These forums follow simple rules. Everyone can be wrong at any time and personally I like to be wrong because that gives me a chance to learn and thus make myself better.
@Everyone who reads this: If the author doesn't post, that doesn't mean she didn't want to post. The probability that she never opened the email is much higher.
Also, her not posting doesn't mean my perspective is correct; feel free to correct me.
