Atheist?

Just a question about atheist... all I know about atheist is that they do not believe in the existence of "GOD".

Does that also mean that they don't believe in a higher purpose of life? If they infact do, then what is an atheist's higher purpose of life then?

hrm good question ... i'm going to buckle myself down to hear a new response on this one ... having been an atheist myself in the past i have a few concepts on the matter however i'll reserve my opinions as they have been done to death anyways ...

Don't matter to me what the section is called. I'm just throwing stuff here about philosophy of life and things that you can think about sometimes.

So far, Hawkeye calls himself Atheist, and also Xs in the past. Since I do not know what an atheist really is, I cannot say whether I am one or not. But personally, I do not believe in a "creator being", but I do have a higher purpose of life. Does that make me an atheist?

atheism is a denial of the existence of a divinity. that's all.
If you deny any divinity then you can call yourself an atheist.
Purpose in life has nothing to do with being an atheist of not.

Divinity has many meaning... for example, I do not believe in "a creator", but I do believe in "divine power". "Divine power" is like a "divine force"... does not mean it is from a "divine being".

Example: to a cavement, fire is like a "divine power". A caveman might not believe in a "Fire God", but he can witness and believe the power of fire.

So, even if I don't believe in a "creator" ie: a divine being; I still believe in "divine power" ie: higher power. Does that make me an atheist?

even if you made that excample i still don't understand what YOU understand as a divine power... give me an example about your divene power and not that of a cave man...

The thing with the cave man i used to use to explain the Deluge (aka Great flood). I always said that the deluge could be only a mass histery provoked by alien kids (or a time traveling family with kids) who played with super soakers...

People need to believe in something if they can not understand how things work or are created, so in there uncertainty they make up things to fill the gaps eg God, Divine Power. Science will eventually answer all questions in time!!!

morality has nothing to do with this. morality is based upon the society and not on religion.

Atheism is something that brings you close to another belief you may not even be aware of.

"Divine power" is power at work that is so amazing, beyond your control, and sometimes even beyond your understanding.

Some common "divine powers" that usually taken for granted are forces of nature like: gravity, relativity, love, good will, karma, etc.

But I do believe in "GOD"; the only difference is my definition of GOD. I do not believe in a "creator", but I definitely do believe in "GOD". So then it comes to what is my definition of GOD?

To me, truth is "GOD", compassion is "GOD", love is "GOD", and other forces that govern all animates as well as inanimates (note: I said forces, not beings)... in other words, the laws of nature eg. gravity, relativity, karma, etc...
which basically means "truth" anyway.

So does that still make me an atheist?

Atheism is a way of living without purposes, without fears, without any rule, any beliefs.
Even so, the general meaning refers to a divinity. Ppl need to belive in something that judge them, something to be affraid of.

Accually i am a Atheist and i pretty much dont have anything like that. Something to judge me are the people around me, but thats just a different type. And something to be affraid of, dont really have something in the sense you mean it.

I was like 12 years old where i realized my parents & family are telling me bullshit and the things my biology, chemistry, physics and technics teachers at told me sounded more beliveable, yes im more or less an atheist but:

so i don´t belive in any gods , hell & heaven and afterlife shitz, (I have almost none moralites and im not that much into human dignity) but i also dont want to be designated as an atheist cause it´d make me be a part of a religion again.

i dont know if i was clear enough to make everyone understand it so here again... with calling myself an atheist i´d be part of the atheist-religion, and beeing part of something like a religion is a NOGO for me, I don´t need a beliefe I rather knowledge.

problem today is that being part of any side has its share of troubles to bear with. easiest way out sometimes is to denial and refuse all...

the religion vs nonreligous is a very deep and detailed debate that I think one should go through, if at all one is interested, and decide.

it cannot be decided simply based on what common people say about their beliefs. if anyone really actually cares about belief, you know.... like depending on priorities, decisions would be made accordingly.

id say you dont care about belief or what side you belong too (ie dont prioritize it as important) since you made your judgement based on teachers / parents / yourself (generally speaking)

well there are some things which "wordly" knowledge cannot provide answers too, thats where belief comes in...

its true and sad most "religions" have become money hoarding schemes. ive seen ppl myself who sell actually sell "tickets" (sects). but from what ive seen, most of the major religions dont require a paycheck to enter heaven

Yes I know you posted well after Invoker but I feel its important I address your question before I divulge into his point of view.

What you are discussing is the simple philosophy of Rene Descartes in his book, A discourse of method, where he uses the, now famous, sentence, I think therefore I am.

As for your earlier question of why things and people must be classified is the simple hard coded belief that everything comes down to statistics. Though that concept has its roots in Numerology (yes I studied that some time ago too) what it comes down to is debating the very core of psychology and its very essence.

So basically if 80% of our species runs around saying that aliens exist, then they are sane and psychologically of sound mind, but if its 1% of the population which says that, they must be nuts entirely. Simply put, a few years ago I read a report that a few thousand people got together in London to protest that their religion be officially recognized as a religion. It sounds 100% plausible and it sounds like they are simply the oppressed and unrecognized underdogs in this world we live in. BUT here comes the next question, "What is their religion?" a question that I asked myself and realize now that its a question we all ask ourselves alot. They followed the religion of the Jedi and Sith (from Star Wars) and I found them all to be obsessed with the concepts out of a book. I do have that argument etched into my brain but I won't get into that here, however I will raise one point here. Just because they aren't the masses they must be nuts, right?

Thats the nature of the human species today. We generalize and expect those generalizations and classifications to be true 100% of the time. For the same reason we rely upon astrology, astronomy, palmistry, numerology and tarot cards. The foundations for those beliefs are all rooted in the same line of thinking which has 2 critical clauses.

1. The other side is greener, and I want it, heck, I deserve it!
2. I have to belong to the upper classes of society and thus alleviate myself from any lowly tasks.

Ask yourself if you find yourself having those kinda thoughts often, and you'll realize you, like the rest of us, are bound by the same limited form of thinking.

Well Here i'll quote Wikipedia since that seems to be one source of information we all have turned to at one point or another ...

However, based on what you are exactly saying, to classify you as an atheist or agnostic atheist or anything else might just be a step in the wrong direction. You need to first ask yourself, Why don't you believe in the religion that has been preached to you? Is it because you don't have a "divine" book? Is it because the divine book that you did have was written by humans? is it because the preachings of your divine book, hold no logical value? is it because you prefer to use logic over and above blind faith?

Thats what it comes down to, isn't it? Blind faith! The 3 most followed religions all have the same basis, the need for blind faith. Once you have identifies what questions you had which did not allow you to have this blind faith, you have to attempt to seek answers to them, sooner or later, these questions will be answered (in some form) by some 'divine' logic, once it is, ask yourself if that logic is correct or not!!!!

I know at this point (actually sooner) many would want to poke my eye out and beat me to a pulp, but I have to ask a few more questions. For this question I'll assume there is a divine entity (god)

1. If that divine entity doesn't allow you to use your mind to the fullest, and UNDERSTAND why/how that divine entity is greater than you, doesn't that ... imply the 'divine entity' is scared?

2. Is it possible that god created a being greater than itself which is why it is scared that god doesn't want the new creation (humans) to discover its ultimate potential of existence?

3. If 'god' created a being greater than itself, would that mean that we humans are gods to computers and artificial intelligence? Since they can do much more complex computations at much faster speeds than us, with a much lower probability of error and also have lives longer than us?

4. Am you a god? Really?

This is one line of thought which should poke you into realizing the lack of validity of your own question. I'm not saying there is a god, I'm not saying there isn't, I'm not saying one religion is better than the other, and I'm NOT saying that only one religion exists and that all others are wrong.

All I'm saying is, since the basis of our atheistic views: is the lack of conviction in the responses we get from those who aren't themselves fully versed in the subject. It is our duty to ourselves, in the sheer possibility that there might be a divine entity, and a life after life, to seek answers to the questions we have from all those that claim their righteousness, in order to ensure we have used our minds and abilities to the fullest, and still not been satisfied by the responses we received.

As far as I can remember the word creator will probably be the best description according to the books. But then there's comes lots people who make their own "version" of god.

The word "creator" itself is not even clear; does it imply a sentient "being" entity?

The sun produces light and energy; can it be called the "creator" of light? It is definitely not a sentient being though.
